U.S.S. HORNET Ship Patch Click here to see larger picture

These are the two patches that my father (Ray Miles) had while serving on board the U.S.S. HORNET CVA-12 from 1954 to October 1957. The patch on the left is the ship's patch, and on the right is the patch for the "GAS GANG", V-4 Division, Purple Shirts, they are the people that refuel the aircraft.

Apollo 11 and 12

Ray Holt is looking for any crewmembers that have stories about the Apollo 11 and 12 recovery missions. Ray is also looking to document any crew members who took, were given or traded pieces of the outer foil skin of the spacecraft or pieces of the heat shield.
It was very common for the NASA crew, who secured the Apollo spacecraft, to trade with crew members for a piece of the Apollo spacecraft. This is a subject that has never been approached or talked about and I'm trying to determine the source material for many supposedly flown artifacts from all of the Apollo missions.
Please contact Ray Holt at spacecrazy@verizon.net

April 2006
The USS Hornet Museum UPDATE!

A year ago, the USS Hornet Museum experienced some financial difficulty. As a result, the ACHF appointed one of their Trustees, Bob Fish, to be interim CEO in mid-June. Immediate activities were focussed on re-establishing basic museum "block and tackling" capabilities, reducing operating expenses, improving the revenue growth and creating a plan to reduce debt. This course correction is now taking effect. The Hornet is regaining financial strength and widespread public visibility of a positive nature - all key metrics were met by the beginning on March 2006. The youth Liveaboard program is nearing record levels and set two significant milestones recently. These were the 500th overnight event since the museum opened and 50,000th child to have spent the night on the ship. There were four TV and movie productions filmed on the ship in late 2005, three of them in December alone. This and other positive publicity continues to expand the visitor base, with many more people coming in from the central valley. The public and private events programs are gaining momentum as well. The ship's location at Alameda Point remains the main ongoing problem until the title is conveyed from the BRAC PMO to the City so base redevelopment can begin. However, in light of this turnaround, the ACHF hired a new full time CEO named Jon Stanley in late March. John is a Naval Academy graduate and was a nuclear power officer in the submarine service for 6 years. He is also a businessman who has the ability to lead the Hornet Museum back to a position of strength in the SF Bay Area community. The Hornet Museum continues to rely on general museum membership dues, corporate donations, individual benefactors and the support of the Hornet Association to remain the premiere naval aviation exhibit in northern California. Please give Jon your active support !
